FontManager 2

FontManager 2 is the best way to easily locate and use as many fonts as you want and need, without letting them take over your PC! If you’ve accumulated far too many fonts over the years and no longer know what to do with them all, or spend far too long searching lengthy font lists for the one you want, FontManager 2 will organise, store and automatically uninstall and reinstall your fonts whenever you need them.

Organise and Group
  • Tailored Font Selection: Limit the choice of fonts available in your program's menus by more selective installation
  • Effective Management: Gather fonts together into tailored subsets, called groups, for ease of storage and bulk install/uninstall. Group by font type, name, make, styles, or for particular uses

Search and Preview
  • Font Search: With FontManager, searching for fonts has never been easier. This may be to locate a missing or specific font, study your Windows Fonts folder or to work on a specific set of located fonts
  • Font Preview: FontManager lets you preview a selected font in several different views, i.e. the Character Table view, Font Faces view, or Text Sample view. Each view provides a different perspective of the font

Install and Uninstall
  • Better Performance: As each installed font is loaded into computer memory when your computer starts, the impact on system resources can be huge if hundreds of installed fonts are to be loaded. If you choose a smaller subset of fonts for install, your system performance will not be affected by fonts loaded unnecessarily
  • Install and Uninstall: Uninstall a font permanently to remove it, or unload to temporarily remove the font for the duration of your current Windows session

Launch from PagePlus
  • Direct Launch: Load FontManager automatically from within PagePlus. Dynamically install fonts used in Serif products, such as PagePlus, whether you’re using TrueType, OpenType, PostScript or bitmap fonts.

FontThing for browsing your fonts

I have hundreds of fonts installed on my computer. When working in Photoshop, it's not possible to scroll through all my fonts to find the right face for a particular use.
That's where
The Font Thing comes in. It's totally free to use, and lets me type in some text and then browse what that text will look like in all the fonts I have installed.

Font Thing is one of the top 5 productivity applications I couldn't live without.
Some text will work great in one font, but look awful in another, because some fonts have weak letters or patterns. So it's often important to match a font to the text that will be shown in that font. Just type in the text you want to see, set the size using the slider at the bottom, and you can scroll through all your installed fonts, looking out for something that has the right feel.

Font Management Software

Font Management Software is a utility that facilitates the handling of the font on your computer. A font management software can give the user a detailed overview of all the fonts installed, make installing or deinstalling fonts easier and much more.
Some of the more advanced utilities check the system for damaged fonts and fix them too. Ordinarily the inbuilt font management tool of the system is enough. However, if you have a large number of fonts active and share libraries then you require an independent utility for their management. The main tasks of font management software are as follows:

  • Organizing the fonts in libraries based on type. This also makes sharing a lot easier.
  • Shorten the font menu. Active font files take up memory. It is advisable to remove the non-active fonts from the Fonts folder to reduce the overhead on the computer.
  • Checking for corrupt fonts. If a system encounters a corrupt or duplicate font, file it gets confused. This may sometimes result in the system crashing too. Therefore, it is advisable to fix the damaged fonts and trash the non-recoverable and duplicate font files.
A good font manager should do all that transparently. In fact, it is the hallmark of a good utility that management of the fonts requires minimum user intervention. Nevertheless, no single software does all that perfectly.
